Chile calls off matches after earthqake
Chile has called off two football friendly matches this week because of the powerful earthquake that has killed at least 700 people in the country.
The South American squad was scheduled to play an unusual doubleheader on Wednesday in Santiago,where they would face North Korea and Costa Rica. Chile will be playing in its first World Cup since 1998.
Harold Mayne-Nicholls, president of the Chile federation, said football was a low priority in the face of the death and destruction brought by the earthquake. Along with Mayne-Nicholls many players have shown their support, last Saturday Chilean striker Humberto Suazo showed his solidarity after scoring two goals for Zaragoza, giving them a victory over Getafe in the Spanish League. Chile ha cancelado dos partidos amistosos esta semana por el fuerte terremoto que a matado por lo menos a 700 personas.
El equipo sudamericano jugaría, en un evento poco usual, dos partidos el Miércoles en la ciudad de Santiago en contra de Corea del Norte y Costa Rica. Chile jugara en su primer copa mundial desde 1998.
El presidente de la Federación de Futbol Chileno Harold Mayne-Nichols, dijo que el futbol no era una prioridad en tiempo de destrucción que ha traído el terremoto. Junto a él, muchos jugadores fuera de Chile han mostrado su apoyo, el Sábado pasado, el goleador Chileno Humberto Suazo mostro su solidaridad después de anotar dos goles para Zaragoza dándoles la victoria sobre Getafe en la Liga Española. Después de anotar los dos goles en el primer tiempo Suazo se levanto la camisa para mostrar el mensaje que leía “Fuerza Chile”.









That doubleheader is a crazy concept. I guess the coach could get a look at multiple players in one day though.

Football definitely takes a back seat when it comes to life. I think by South Africa, Chile will be playing some inspired footy. Watch out group H!
