Chile calls off matches after earthqake

1 March 2010 by DT 3 Comments

Chile has called off two football friendly matches this week because of the powerful earthquake that has killed at least 700 people in the country.

The South American squad was scheduled to play an unusual doubleheader on Wednesday in Santiago, where they would face North Korea and Costa Rica. Chile will be playing in its first World Cup since 1998.

Harold Mayne-Nicholls, president of the Chile federation, said football was a low priority in the face of the death and destruction brought by the earthquake. Along with Mayne-Nicholls many players have shown their support, last Saturday Chilean striker Humberto Suazo showed his solidarity after scoring two goals for Zaragoza, giving them a victory over Getafe in the Spanish League. Suazo lifted his jersey to reveal a t-shirt with the words “Fuerza

That doubleheader is a crazy concept. I guess the coach could get a look at multiple players in one day though.

Football definitely takes a back seat when it comes to life. I think by South Africa, Chile will be playing some inspired footy. Watch out group H!
